Star Wars Comic: Darth Vader (vol 1)

Continuing my Star Wars comics reading is the series that follows Darth Vader, one of the most iconic villains of all time. This comic begins in the same time frame as their main Star Wars comic and there are references to it in here, but if you haven’t read it, it’s okay as the comic gets you up to speed.

The story sees Darth Vader having to deal with the fact that his master, Emperor Palpatine, isn’t too pleased with him. The Death Star’s destruction is still breaking news, the Rebels have now blown up a Weapons factory, and to top it off, Vader is now being monitored (like when the inspectors visit your school and someone comes to your class to watch your teacher, Vader has one of those people). We get to see Vader, not only carrying out his official mission, but also see him carry out his own investigations. What is the Emperor keeping secret from Vader? Who was responsible for the Death Star’s destruction? Vader needs to know.

Darth Vader is done wonderfully in this comic. They just get him right. He’s intimidating and full of anger, even when he’s speaking to characters who don’t seem to fear him. If you’re a fan of Vader I would definitely recommend this comic to you. Unlike the main Star Wars comic, this one didn’t need a run up to get settled into the story and the characters, straight away it was great. There was a story at the end of the volume that I didn’t feel too interested in, but that is yet to be developed in volume 2.

The surprising stars, for me, were the droids, 000 (triple zero) and BT-1 (Bee-Tee). They can only be described as an evil version of C-3PO and R2-D2, and they are great. I look forward to seeing them in future comics, and hopefully in other canon material.

The artwork was also very good, and even though it’s not my preferred style, there were some great panels, especially of Vader.

Overall, the comic was great. Star Wars fans should really check it out. The comic was written by Kieron Gillen, art by Salvador Larroca, and colouring by Edgar Delgado.

What about you? What did you think about the new Darth Vader comic? What character do you hope gets their own comic? Feel free to let me know here in the comments, or on my twitter. And remember, no disintegrations.
